My journey toward appreciating Seiko began with my first trip to Japan in 2008 while researching the chapter on Kenji Shiohara for my book 12 Faces of Time. It was there that I learned that Seiko was producing ultra-luxurious, very finely finished timepieces. This took place where Shiohara worked in the Micro Artist department, which produced incredibly intricately finished pieces of high horology.


Seiko's story is much more complicated than most people might think. This is a manufacturer that doesn't follow trends, but has created a few of its own, capitalizing on various types of expertise and knowledge that were the mother of necessity for a manufacturer located so far away from the established centers of watchmaking in Europe.

Contrary to popular belief, Seiko's history did not begin with the quartz watch in the 1970s, nor has it ended there. This Far Eastern giant has banked on innovation for more than 120 years (beginning with the Hattori family founding its own factory for pocket watches in 1892 after Kintaro Hattori opened his boutique on Tokyo's famed Ginza in 1881) and now masters more types of watchmaking (mechanical quartz, solar, and Spring Drive) than any other company making timepieces.

In 2010, as I was sitting in the annual press conference that Seiko holds at Baselworld, my ears perked up when I heard the Japanese brand's representative announce that it would finally begin distributing Grand Seiko in other parts of the world. Up to that point, it had been a sort of insider timepiece that was only for sale within Asia, where it enjoyed an excellent reputation.

Quill & Pad co-founder Ian Skellern summed up a general feel of this perception very well when he recently said to me, "I rate the quality and fine finishing of the Grand Seiko as world-class and on par with fine Swiss watchmaking, but feel that it is unfortunately held back by the name 'Seiko,' which is strongly associated with mass-market best cheap rolex replica watches."

And that is the crux of the perception that westerners have regarding Seiko. Because this manufacture is capable of producing every part of a wristwatch – including every single movement component (even LIGA parts, which Seiko calls Mems, and springs) and uniquely even cases, crystals, and other habillage – it produces timepieces in every price class, even quartz- and solar-powered watches. "Seiko is considered the main brand in contributing to almost crashing the Swiss watch industry in the 1980s because of its affordable quartz watches," says Louis Nardin, editor-in-chief of the Swiss video channel The Watches TV. "Seiko had developed quartz calibers as well as the industrial capability to produce them in quantity and for a lower price in the 1970s. Of course, Seiko was not the only reason for the decline of Swiss watchmaking at that time, but the Japanese brand has occupied a 'special' place in Swiss people's minds ever since."

The Grand Seiko line has been in existence for more than 50 years now, and it represents what the company calls "the very best of Seiko." The collection was conceived to feature the very best in aesthetics, durability, legibility, and horological excellence.

The history of the Baselworld watch and jewelry fair we know today began on April 15, 1917 as the first Schweizer Mustermesse Basel (MUBA).

Coincidentally (or perhaps not) this time is not only the same one that saw the wristwatch rise to popularity, but also one in which World War I represented a serious threat to the artistry of Swiss craftsmen.

A total of 831 companies from diverse branches of the national Swiss economy such as the chemical industry, banking, insurance, and transport and shipping – the city of Basel's chief economic mainstays – exhibited in the city's casino, and the 6,000-square-meter exhibition space also included a special section for watches and jewelry.

Among the first exhibitors were watch brands Tissot, Thommen, Longines, and Ulysse Nardin.

Mustermesse is German for "sample fair," a word perfectly characterizing the beginnings of this exposition, which has become the most important annual gathering of the watch industry in the world.

And it remains the oldest trade fair in Switzerland open to the public.

In 1923, six years after it had begun, the first halls were built where today's Hall 1 stands. This was also the year in which Zenith exhibited for the first time, making 2017 the Le Locle-based brand's 94th appearance at the show. Just one year later, the Swiss watch industry's Fédération Horlogère (FH) was called to life – an association it would be hard to imagine the industry without today.

For the exhibition of 1925, MUBA ("Mustermesse Basel") invited several more watch manufacturers. This was obviously successful, for in 1926 the first hall dedicated solely to the watch and jewelry sector – high-end Schaffhausen-based jeweler Furrer Jacot had already been exhibiting since 1924 – was opened on the grounds.

The $135.00 price tag of the Everest rubber strap may seem excessive when so many "comparable" eBay quality generic straps can be found in the marketplace, which are typically made of silicon and not high quality (and high cost) thermoplastic rubber which Everest uses. When you consider the cost of the materials, and the design engineering costs of creating a strap to fit individual Rolex sport models exclusively, the $135.00 price tag is at least reasonable. One In Five Straight Men Rolex Fake Watches Gay Sex

A new study published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, which examined the porn-viewing habits of 821 gay, straight, and bisexual men from around the country, found a number of unexpected results. So what gives? It's no giant leap to hypothesize why gay men might enjoy watching straight porn: to watch straight guys. Dr. Martin J. Downing, the study's lead researcher, had the same question. When his team looked at the data, they confirmed that the straight men didn't report having sex with men, and the gay men (outside of a very small fraction) didn't report having sex with women. Their sexual behavior and sexual identity seem to line up. Downing sees this "identity discrepant viewing" as "some level of evidence" of fluidity in sexual attraction, at least in terms of what people are watching.

Meanwhile, bisexual men displayed porn-viewing habits that were quite distinct from those of their homo and hetero peers. Bi men reported watching guy-on-guy porn just as much as gay men do, and they consumed heterosexual porn (one male/one female) almost as much as heterosexual men. They also reported watching a significant amount of "bisexual porn" that has either two men and one woman or two women and one man. According to Downing, bisexual men aren't "watered down gays or heterosexuals."

"[Bisexual men] are more like heterosexual men in some things, and more like gay men in other things, but that's a reflection of their own unique attractions. They're not identical to either group in terms of their porn viewing, which I think is really interesting for understanding bisexuality."

For instance, both bi and heterosexual men reported viewing solo masturbation material (the report did not indicate the sex of the person depicted) at about the same rate — around 60 percent — while less than 50 percent of gay men did. Bisexual men were markedly less interested in viewing sexually explicit material involving bondage and kink (13.7 percent) than their straight (24.6 percent) or gay (27.9 percent) peers — unless that kink involved fisting, felching, or water sports, all activities gay men were far more likely to report fake rolex oyster perpetual 114300 red watches.

It's unfortunately quite rare for studies examining porn consumption in men to get this level of group comparison — heterosexual, gay, and bisexual men, and enough participants to look at each group separately. The science that has been done thus far tends to break down into two broad camps. That is how a lot of research is conducted, but in the light of this study's data it seems to be clearly problematic.

There are a few takeaways from this study: Our porn consumption is more eclectic than previously suspected, and bisexual men are distinct from their straight and gay brothers in their pornographic habits and inclinations. Though not the study's focus, this further suggests that bisexuality isn't simply a way station on the road to being gay; bisexuals are bisexual.
